The importance of ‘Logic’ in UX

Hi, y’all, today is a real gloomy day in Milan and I believe it’s the perfect time to deep dive into something that, in the world of UX, gets me going - Logic.

What is logic? How does it apply to UX strategy? and, ultimately, why is it so important in my day-to-day life? (and should be in yours too)

For me, Logic can be defined as ‘ The systematic and coherent study of reasoning, inference, and the principles governing valid arguments ‘. If you think about it, this is such a powerful definition but, let me break it down in the context of UX.

UX is Systematic & Coherent: Funny enough, I previously wrote about UX strategy being Dynamic but, indeed it is also very systematic. Being in a position of using tools dynamically doesn’t mean that we can’t be systematic. For instance, let’s take UX research as one of the steps in our process. We must use logic and being both systematic and coherent in our process. We have to try our best to leave pre-conceded assumptions & bias behind so that we can dive into understanding what the problem we are solving for is really about. The beauty of being a strategist is that we have the freedom of choosing. We can choose the most suitable techniques (the dynamic part of it all) but, then we need to stick to what we chose, create a strong system so that we can deliver the best relevant results. The same applies to other steps of the process: UX design (you can pick and choose your tool for delivery), UX Analysis and UX management. Use logic, and plan yourself out!

UX is Reasoning: Reasoning must be with capital R! Why? Simple, you can’t be spontaneous and unprepared. Use your ability to understand whether you first fit in the project and then figure out the best way to approach it. Not always you will find yourself in front of an easy project (probably never), but it is your job (and the beauty of it all) to use logic and reason to understand what you need in order to succeed. I often think of UX strategists as the Legion commanders, they are fearless fighters who always try to face a new challenge in the best strategic way. (If you haven’t, try reading Marcus Aurelious books, for some reason they give me strength and reassurance in my work life).

UX is Governance: Picking up on my previous point, as a UX Strategist, we are in charge. Whether you work on a sport e-commerce like me, or on a boring appliances business e-commerce (No offence here!), the development of it all is like your own life. All the tickets are your little babies who you are growing and you want the best for them. (I know it sounds weird, but websites grow on me, I become so passionate I would defend developments with all my heart). Be aware though, you aren’t a tirant. As Strategist, my biggest recommendation is: Govern and own your own projects BUT, be open-minded, listen to constructive feedback and try to always question your own work and strategy. Only good things will come!

In conclusion (as if I was writing a paper lol), my point here is - Logic is a beautiful thing, not everyone has it in them. If you are, or what to be a UX strategist (or any strategist really), start (or continue) incorporating a logical approach to your work. I believe it would bring you a lot of join and satisfaction.

Cheers for today :)
